On my 2001 Cadillac Seville my exterior rear view power mirror?
it dosen't seen to move smooth when I try to adjust it, seems to move in a sort of small jumping movement until it gets into place. When it feels like it it will go out of adjustment again.
Ive heard of this before. Unfortunatly what you need to do to fix it, is take off the entire mirror.... and its very hard to do.
you need to remove the entire door panel to gain access to the wiring harness.
unscrew the arm rest and cup for the door handle. Next, take a flat head screw driver and run it underneath the door panel until you feel resistance. that is where the pop brackets are. slowly pry up. Do this around the entire panel, it will then be loose. you then need to unhook all the power windows/locks wiring harnesses, then manipulate the panel around the door handle, it will then come off.
You will find a wiring harness leading up to the mirror, unhook this.
next, there is a peice of plastic (or tweater speakers) on the inside of the door, next to the mirrors that needs to come off. Pry this up and you will see two 10 mm bolts. have someone hold the mirror, and loosen the bolts, until the mirror comes off.
Next, you have to dismantle the housing. its pretty self explanatory. unscrew the screws.
when you finally reach the motor, you will see a black seal (grease seal), this is the problem. pull it out, and you will see that the grease they used is full of crap (best terminology for it).
Clean out the grease with a dry tooth brush, and then replace it with a white lithium grease.
Now if the seal itself is damaged, you can find a replacement at any gm service center.
now if it just annoys you, and you really dont want to take 2 hours to fix it, just leave it, it wont hurt anything.
