which projector last longer, a LCD or a DLP one?
I wanna buy a projector for entertainment purposes and there are two technologies, LCD and DLP
The first one uses 3 LCD to make the image (by combining 3 streams (RGB)) and the other one uses a rotating mirror/chip or something like that, each ones have pros and cons but now i'm concerned about the durability and the mean time before failure. (doesn't matter the contrast or the size)
ok, i know that LCD's are more reliables than other technologies 'cause digital things have a better performance, using less energy what means less heat, but i wasn't sure about this kind of devices.
agb90spruce i don't think LCD projectors use OLED, i know the blue becomes weak with the time in OLED displays but it's a new technology so may not be on the market yet (i dunno)
Both have long life expectancy ... although organic LCD is much more likely to fail/change colours than inorganic. If comparing inorganic LCD vs DLP I'd focus on features/performance and not worry about lifetime. Bulbs and changing technology are likely to prompt upgrade/retirement before DLP or LCD panel failure.
Keep in mind that 3 chip DLP projectors are $20K+ items and many have been around for a decade or more and still work fine.
EDIT: I'm not talking about OLED. LCD panels were (and some still are) made with organic LCD panels. The high intensity light in a projector slowly degrades organic dyes. From the Projector Central site: "Based on my experience with LCD projectors, my rule of thumb for organic LCD panel degradation is to assume that the projector will be unusable by the time you finish the second bulb. So if the bulb is rated at 3000 hours, I would assume a useful life of the projector at no more than 6000 hours. If you use such an organic LCD projector as a TV replacement you will likely have to replace it every few years."
I've also added a couple of links to support my original response.
