I hit a parked car while riding my bike. What to do?
In the process, I completely took out the driver's side mirror and cracked their bumper. The car was parked on the side of the road. I had only a few scrapes. The man asked me if he should contact insurance or not. I'm only 18, I have no idea what to tell him. The damages to the car are still being estimated. What happens in this sort of situation? Will my parent's insurance premiums rise if I make some sort of claim? Should he contact his insurance? I live in Canada.
There isn't a common Bicycle Insurance policy that is equivalent to auto insurance. But various forms of insurance can cover you while bicycling.
The Personal Liability coverage of your parents homeowners insurance usually provides you with liability protection against claims caused by almost any unintentional act, including unintentional acts committed by you or your qualified family members, either on or off your premises.
This Personal Liability coverage can protect you from claims for injuries or damage you cause in a bicycle accident.
The rates can increase depending on the insurance company and the amount of the damages and your parents will have a deductible to pay as well.
If you are no covered then since you are 18 years of age the other party can sue you for the damages and the court will place a judgment against you that will remain there until this has been satisfied.
