How do store detectors work? Do they detect regular magnets?

If I bring a magnet into a store, will the store detector start beeping? Sometimes, I have those mirror key chains with the magnets in my purse, and I'm not sure if the detectors will go off. What else will cause detectors to go off?

Do they only go off on their own special magnets? Sometimes, I go INTO a store and it beeps. Talk about embarrassing. I am not a thief and don't need to be one, so I would like to know to prevent future embarssments. Thank you.

No anti-theft device I have ever heard of uses plain magnets (and I think I know how most every system works in principle).

Most stores use tags that actually have a radio receiver/transmitter inside the tag. The large styles you walk by at the door provide enough energy directed specifically at the tag to energize it and then it transmits a signal. At the register, a separate transmitter sets the tag so the one at the door won't activate it. Some of these deactivate the tag permanently -- older tags were only disabled for a short time.

There are several different types of these tag systems but they all work on the same principle -- and none of them are magnetic.

If I feel really obnoxious, I will carefully take a tag off of an item at home and put it sticky-side up outside the door of the store where I got that item/tag. Then when someone steps on it, they will walk inside and set off the alarm. It's a good practical joke -- anonymously.

Maybe someone did that to you with an older-style tag.

Also -- if you don't take those tags off, and if you walk back in the store with the purchased item -- some of the older systems will detect them and set off the alarm.
