what is the traditional style of a play?
I aam writting a play review and on the guide it says did the director direct this pruduction in the traditional style of this play, i dont understand
EAch play either conforms to a theatrical tradition or breaks out of the tradition of its time. For example, a Shakespearean play would've been very fast-paced, full of gestures, include the audience, and probably include Elizabethan costumes and music. But Shakespeare is often updated. I did a version of King Lear that centered around a conference table and everyone involved was dressed in business suits and nice dresses. The "kingdom" he was dividing between his three daughters was his corporation. I also did an Elizabethan play that had songs of THAT time in it, but since we were fairly sure the jokes would be lost on the audience if we all of a sudden burst into some sea-chanty, we updated all of the songs and included "American Woman," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Who Can It Be (Knocking at My Door)?," "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" and stuff like that. Most of the farces of Noel Coward have a curtain call that begins in a tableau or "freeze"; at appointed times, beginning with the smallest part and going to the lead, they "unfreeze," come down stage and take their bow. Some people don't know this and so they don't conform to the traditional Coward Curtain Call.
