How do I hang a mirror? Details below....?
Sorry if the question seems basic, but I want to do it right and have never done it before. I also don't want to damage the wall. The mirror will go above the fireplace (I plan to rest the bottom edge on the mantle). The wall is plaster-- I am afraid that if I put a nail in, there might be a long crack in the plaster. There is a wire on the back of the mirror (to facilitate hanging the mirror). Any advice, even small details will be very much appreciated. Thanks.
OK. If there is a wire already on the back of the mirror, odds are that it is of sufficient tensile strength to hold the weight of the mirror, esp. if it will be resting on your mantle.
For plaster walls, you need things called "wall anchors." Wall anchors are not nearly as complicated as they sound, and are simply screws with extra bits around them.
You'll need a power drill, some wall anchors, a pencil, measuring tape, and maybe a screwdriver.
Figure out where the wire on the back of the mirror actually will be when the mirror is suspended, i.e., pull it up with one finger until you can't.
Next measure your mantle. Get the midpoint of the length.
Measure the width of the mirror. Get its midpoint.
Align the midpoints.
Put a pencil mark on the actual spot on the wall where the wire will hang, using the combined midpoint.
Drill the wall anchor into the plaster at that point. This will be fairly easy.
Then you're done!
If it's a particularly heavy mirror, or the wall anchor doesn't sit well in the plaster (it starts to give), then you have to knock on your plaster to find a support beam in the wall, then use that (it will go from hollow-sounding to a denser, muffled sound.). If you find a support beam, you can just use a nail, although you'll need a strong steel nail to get through the material.
